A letter of intent for employment, commonly known as a cover letter, accompanies a resume and helps introduce a person to a potential employer. A successful letter of intent convinces an employer to delve deeper into the applicant’s resume. This document should include some specific information such as how the applicant learned of the job opening, an outline of the applicant’s qualifications, why the applicant is sending the letter, provide specific information asked for by the employer, and indicate how the employer can reach the applicant. However, the document should not be longer than one page. Further, if a resume supplements the letter of intent, the resume and the cover letter should be in the same font and font size.

Dear Mr. Doe:
I am responding to your post in the Virginia Gazette advertising for a marketing assistant. I am interested in applying for this position and believe that I would be an asset to your company.
After receiving my degree from the University of Virginia, I began working as a first-level assistant for Hiring Always, Co.. My responsibilities included drafting marketing proposals and creating campaigns for our different customers. Through these interactions, I learned how to manage my time appropriately and to think creatively. While I enjoyed my time at Hiring Always, Co., I am ready to expand my horizons and am ready for the challenge of being your marketing assistant.
I would welcome the opportunity to interview with your company and am available at your earliest convenience. I can be reached at (555) 555-5555 or Jane.Smith@email.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
Very respectfully,
Jane Smith
