A letter of recommendation for a friend focuses on the friend’s core character as opposed to the friend’s work experience. As such, the person asked to write the letter should be able to honestly evaluate and recommend the friend as a person. If not, the would-be writer should politely decline. The writer needs to mention his relationship with the applicant in the first paragraph. Further, the writer should concentrate on positive characteristics, not give the applicant undue praise. When closing the letter, the writer should encourage the letter’s recipient to call with any questions or to discuss the applicant.

To whom it may concern:
I have known John Doe for 10 years as a friend and neighbor. It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation.
Without hesitation, John is one of the finest and most hard-working people that I have ever known. He routinely volunteers with local charities, such as the local food bank. Every year, he organizes a food drive for the food bank. He also heads the fundraising effort for the food bank. Last year, John’s hard work and dedication in the fundraising arena culminated in a wonderful charity ball that raised substantial amounts of money for the food bank.
On a more personal level, John always helps out a neighbor. John helps the elderly neighbors with their yard work. When I had a family emergency, John immediately asked me what he could do to help.
I strongly urge you to hire John Doe for your company. You will find him to be a great asset to you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have at (555) 555-5555.
Very respectfully,
Susan Smith
